Verona hosts a large number of events and international exhibitions; the most famous event is by far the Arena di Verona Festival, held every summer, where you can watch operas such as Aida by Giuseppe Verdi.
The Arena di Verona, the best-preserved amphitheatre in the world, is an uninterrupted ellipse formed by 72 double stone arches, and is located in Piazza Bra. Its name comes from a corruption of the word “Braida”, which in turn derives from the Lombardic term breit, or “broad”, and in fact it is the largest square in Verona.
How then could you miss the evocative Piazza delle Erbe, the oldest piazza in Verona, home to many interesting monuments? Pay particular attention to the Arco della Costa, so named for the cetacean bone (perhaps whale) that is hung off of it.
Other places to see: Giardino Giusti, one of the finest examples of Italian Renaissance gardens, Ponte Pietra, the Roman Theatre, the Duomo and the ancient churches of Sant’Anastasia and San Zeno.
What events does Verona host?
In addition to the aforementioned summer opera season in the Arena, the Veronese “Gnocchi Friday” carnival is quite nice, and if you’re a wine lover, visit the Vinitaly wine fair (“International exhibition of wines and spirits”), among the most important in the sector.
